Apple theme in Kindergarten is kind of a big deal. It's one of the first official themes of the year. It's a sign that fall is near. Apples also happens to be one of my favorite themes to cover. From apple tasting, apple theme activities, to making Apple Pie in a Cup – I just love it all. Today I wanted to share ideas for apple themed centers as well as fun and a set of free apple themed printables to teach letters and letter sounds.

September is the perfect month for an apple theme. It's a topic that most students have some background knowledge of. Most, if not all, students have eaten apples and some maybe have even gone apple picking. Not to mention an apple theme is a great way to celebrate Johnny Appleseed Day.

One of the best parts of being a kindergarten teacher is teaching fun, themed units. Fall is the perfect time to study apples with your students and tie in cross-curricular learning. Read on for a ton of exciting apple week activities and ideas sure to make your apple week a major hit!

This article, along with many other articles on The Printable Princess, contains Amazon affiliate links. If you purchase through the links I earn a small commission.  We only share links to resources and products we love.

Apple Read Alouds

There's no better way to engage your students during apple week than with apple-themed read alouds that grab their attention and get them hooked on learning about apples.

Read alouds are a way to connect with your students and help foster a love for reading. It's a time to come together, relax, listen to a story, and have a great discussion about the story. Students will also gain the benefit of hearing from a fluent, expressive reader.

Some of my all-time favorite books to read during your apple week activities are:

Apple Pie in a Cup Snack

You've probably heard of teachers making crockpot applesauce with their students. Feel free to switch it up this year and have some delicious fun with this apple week snack called Apple Pie in a Cup.

This is such an easy recipe and there is no baking required! Now that is MY kind of recipe. Your students will LOVE this treat.

All you need are: graham crackers, apple pie filling, whipped cream, and cinnamon. For the complete recipe, a corresponding sequencing freebie, and a step-by-step video, check out this blog post.

While students eat their snacks, it's a great time to read the book, Amelia Bedelia's First Apple Pie.

Apple Taste Test Investigation

Your apple week activities wouldn't be complete without an apple taste test investigation. Anytime students can have a snack at school, they're automatically more excited. And lucky for you, it just so happens to be healthy too! #teacherwin

Prepping for the apple taste testing

To prepare for the apple taste testing, you can pre-cut your apples using an apple cutter and store them in sealed containers with a little bit of lemon juice over the top to prevent them from browning.

This saves you from having to cut all of the apples using sharp utensils while your students wait for you to start the lesson.

Write the name of each apple on a sticky note and place it on the outside of the container so you know which is which.

Completing the apple taste testing

To complete your apple taste test investigation, give students a small paper plate with one slice of each apple. Before tasting, have students predict what each apple will taste like and observe the color and texture of the apples.

Have students taste test red, green, and yellow apples and share their thoughts about what each apple tastes like.

Chances are, you'll have students who have never tried a yellow and/or green apple, so it's a great way to give students the opportunity to try something new.

After the taste test, discuss the taste of each apple using descriptive words such as sweet, sour, tart, bitter, etc.

You can record these adjectives on the whiteboard and even create a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the different types of apples.

Apple taste test graphing

If you'd like to take the apple taste test investigation a step further, you can create a class graph to show what type of apple each student liked best.

You can draw a large, basic bar graph on the whiteboard and label the bottom of each column with the different types of apples tasted. Students can take turns coming up to the whiteboard and writing their names in a space above their favorite apple.

They can also mark their spot by using die-cut apples in different colors and writing their name on them to show what they choose.

After each child has completed the graph, count how many students chose each color. You can also discuss which apple had the most and least votes.

You can download an apple graph freebie by clicking here so your students can follow along and complete their own individual graphs.

Apple Themed Crafts

Brighten up the halls or your classroom with these apple-themed crafts!

This set of monthly crafts includes 12 beginning-of-the-year crafts (4 math, 4 phonics, and 4 writing crafts) for students to put together.

The included crafts are EASY to put together since they were designed specifically for little hands to be able to cut and assemble (dotted cut-out lines, large pieces, etc.).

These August and September crafts are perfect for reinforcing skills like letter recognition, numbers to 5, 2D shapes, name building, and All About Me.

Ready to get crafty with your students? You will love how easy and adorable these apple-themed crafts are!

Apple Writing Activities

Incorporating apple week activities into your writing block is a great way to introduce students to new vocabulary words and incorporate the theme of apples into their writing.

Using apple-themed writing centers is a great way to encourage students to write using apple vocabulary words and descriptive words and illustrations.

These apple writing centers will help students learn about the different parts of an apple and how apples grow, and give students an opportunity to learn about all of the different ways apples can be used and eaten.

Apple Math and Literacy Centers

While apple week may be a ton of fun, there's still work to do and skills to practice. However, with apple math and literacy centers, you can be sure your students will have a blast and not even realize they're learning.

With 26 centers, your students will be able to practice skills such as letter recognition, beginning sounds, uppercase and lowercase matching, one-to-one correspondence, counting, ten-frames, number order, and more.

Use them during your apple week activities and all throughout the fall for a ton of hands-on, meaningful math and literacy practice. Learning has never been as sweet as with these apple-themed centers for kindergarten.

For a little more apple-themed math practice, grab this apple math game freebie by clicking here.

I hope these apple week activities for kindergarten have inspired you to try something new with your students this year.

By incorporating seasonal, themed units like apple week, you give your students the opportunity to learn about the world around them in a way they may have never done before.

It's truly a magical learning experience for students and I can't wait to hear about your apple week activities. Share what's on your apple week agenda in the comments below.

I just wanted to pop in real quick to share with you this Pick the Apple math game freebie. It's perfect for apple week, or really any time during the fall months.

Students play with a partner, which helps to build team work, problem solving skills – and even learning how to wait our turn. All of the things that are important to practice early in the school year.

Plus you're able to sneak in some math practice, so it's a win-win!

Pick the Apple Math Game FreebieTo prepare this activity, simply print and laminate the game mats (each player will need their own). Players will need a dot cube and 20 manipulatives to cover their board.

You can use plastic math cubes, mini erasers, or pom-poms. I got these adorable apple erasers on Amazon. You can use my affiliate link to check out these apple mini erasers on Amazon.

How to Play Pick the Apple Math Game

Before the game begins players will use erasers or manipulatives to cover all of the white circles on their game mat.

Players will take turns rolling the dot cube and counting to determine the number they rolled. They will pick/remove that many apples from the tree.

Players will continue to take turns rolling and picking apples until the first player removes all of the apples from their tree. To remove all of the apples, the player must roll the exact number needed. For example, if a player has two apples left on their game board, they must roll a two to win the game.

But Who Picks the Apple First?

Great question! I think the easiest way to decide who goes first is to have each player roll the dot cube once. The player who rolls the larger number goes first. If they both roll the same number, roll again! Easy peasy.

If you're a PreK, Kindergarten, or First Grade teachers there's a good chance you've got an apple theme planned for the month of September or October. Apple week is one of our first “official” themes of the year. It's also one of my favorite themes to cover.

One of the best things about apple week is all of the delicious treats and taste testing. Apples, applesauce, and my favorite…apple pie in a cup. The ingredients for Apple Pie in a Cup are simple and it's so easy to assembly. All you need is graham crackers, diced apples or apple pie filling, whipped cream, and cinnamon. There is no baking required, which is my kind of baking.

It's the perfect way to fill the afternoon if you've spent the morning at the apple orchard. Or it's a great Friday activity to end apple week. Depending on the size of your group, you can have students make the pies or simply pass them out.

I should also mention that this snack goes PERFECTLY with “Amelia Bedelia's First Apple Pie”. It's an adorable story, if you don't already have the book you can check it out on Amazon using my affiliate link: Amelia Bedelia's First Apple Pie. I like to read the book as students eat their snack.

Step by Step Directions:

You'll start with the graham crackers. Each Apple Pie in a Cup needs one to two graham crackers, depending on the size of the cup. If you're doing this with a small group of students, you can put the graham cracker in a zip top bag and have the students crush it. Why not sneak in a little fine motor work, right?

For a whole group activity, you can either pre-crush the graham crackers or put several in a gallon size zip top bag and let students take turns crushing the graham crackers. Once the graham crackers are in small pieces, you'll want to put a generous scoop or two on the bottom of the cup. If you're in a real hurry, they sell pre-crushed graham crackers by the pie crusts at the grocery store.

This graham cracker layer is the base or crust for the apple pie in a cup.

For the next step to make the apple pie in a cup, you'll add the apple pie goodness. You can use apple pie filling or diced apples. I used a 21oz can of apple pie filling. You can warm the apple pie filling up in a crock pot or microwave – but that is definitely not necessary. I put about two heaping scoops on top of the graham cracker crust. Depending on the size of your scoop, you can make about 6-8 pies per can of pie filling.

Next you'll add some whipped cream and top it off with a sprinkle of cinnamon or cinnamon sugar. Do you need the sprinkle of cinnamon? No, but I think it looks prettier and it makes the whipped cream taste yummy!

As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, I like to read Amelia Bedelia's First Apple Pie while the students enjoy their snack. If you're wanting to turn this into a “snack-tivity”, I created a recording sheet to practice sequencing.

If you've been following my blog for awhile, you know that I love anything seasonal or holiday related. One of my favorite past-times is running to different craft stores, dollar stores, and dollar sections to find fun and cute seasonal items. {While my husband often tags along, this is definitely not one of his favorite past times! But he's such a good helper!} I love to use the treasures I find to make fun learning activities with a seasonal or holiday twist!

That's where today's post comes into play – no prep fall activities for Kindergarten!

Students are often so excited about upcoming holidays or seasons, so I love using that enthusiasm to get them excited about learning. Today I'm going to share with you some fun ideas for bringing fall in to your classroom with some no prep fall activities for Kindergarten.
But first…what is just as awesome as no prep fall activities for Kindergarten? Creating TWO low prep games with one set of materials. Since you're prepping once and making two games, that makes one of the games no prep, right?!?! Haha!!
Below I am going to show you two quick games that can be played two ways.
On the lookout for no prep fall activities for Kindergarten? Then you're going to love these low prep math and ELA games! These easy to prep DIY games are perfect for your Kinder students, but they'll also work with in preschool or 1st grade classrooms! {Homeschool families will love these too!} Click through to see how you could use these games in September, October, or November in your primary classroom. They're also great for your fall or Halloween unit themes! Get the details now!!
First up is this cute pumpkin game to practice numbers to 10. I found these pumpkin trays at the Dollar Tree. I was so thrilled to see that there was exactly ten cut outs on this tray. They must have known teachers would be using them to teach numbers to 10! The pom-poms (or “pumpkin seeds”) and dot cubes I already had.

They're also great for your fall or Halloween unit themes! Get the details now!!
For this activity I have students sit side by side so that they can easily see the other player's board. Students will each need their own ten frame mat and pair of dot cubes. I also give students a container with snap cubes (7-10 cubes per player).

Students independently roll their set of dot cubes, count the number, and make that number on their ten frame. Students then compare their ten frame with their partners to see which number is greater. The student with the greater number takes one snap cube. They continue to play until one player has 10 snap cubes (or however many snap cubes you decide to use). Use less snap cubes as the target if you have less time.

Variations: You could also have students play by looking for the number that is less.
You could also have students use tweezers to pick up the pom-poms and put them on the tray for a little fine motor practice.

Since a pair of dot cubes could potentially roll a 12 and we are only working on numbers to 10, I put a plain round sticker on the 6 side. Students use this as the number 0, now the highest number they can roll is a 10.
Here's another way to use these materials:

This game is played similar to “Roll and Cover”. I used stickers to write numbers 1-10 in each space on the game mat. This wasn't one of my better ideas though! The sticker didn't stick too well, oops! So after I took a picture I used a Sharpie to write the numbers directly on the pumpkin mat.
For this game, students need a game mat, pom-poms, and they will share a set of dot cubes. Make sure the 6 side is covered on the dot cubes.
Students roll the dot cubes, count the dots, and put a seed in that space on their pumpkin mat. Students continue to take turns rolling the dot cubes and covering the numbers on their mat. If a students roll a number that they have already covered, they lose a turn. The first player to cover all of their numbers is the winner.
Here's another prep once, play twice activity. This time for literacy centers. {Aren't you just loving all of these no prep fall activities for Kindergarten?!}

I found these pumpkin cut outs and letter cut outs at the craft store. You can use a dab of rubber cement or hot glue to adhere the letters to the pumpkins. Or could can write the letters on using a Sharpie marker. I included a pair of tweezers for a little fine motor practice.
Students pick the gems (aka pumpkin seeds) up using tweezers and form the letter using the “pumpkin seeds”. You could have students say the letter sound each time they pick up a seed.
Here's another way to use these same materials:

We took our pumpkin cut outs and turned them face down on the table. I put one to two seeds on the back of the pumpkins. For a little twist and motivation, I add two seeds to some of the letters. This might be letters that the group is having trouble with or letters that we have just learned.
To play a student selects a pumpkin, turns it over, and says the letter name. If they get it right, they keep the pumpkin seed(s). If they don't, they turn the pumpkin back over, the seed(s) goes back on top, and it is the next players turn. We continue playing until time is up or all of the pumpkins have been played. The player with the most pumpkin seeds is the winner. After students have played this in a small group, it gets move to an independent partner activity.

You could also play by having students say the letter sound or a word that starts with that letter.
Now for some no prep fall activities for Kindergarten! These activities come from the packet A Dab of Learning {No Prep Printables}: Fall Edition. I love this no prep series because it's a great way for teachers to provide students with fun activities that don't require a ton of prep.
You can read this blog post for ideas on introducing bingo dabbers in your classroom. I really love using Do-A-Dot bingo dabbers with students. They last a long time and don't bleed through the paper. But don't worry, if dabbers aren't used in your classroom, students can complete these activities using crayons as well.
You can use my affiliate link to get your dabbers here.
This no prep fall activities for Kindergarten packet includes 37 no prep pages of skills that are appropriate during the fall months in Kindergarten. There's lots of fall themes included like acorns, scarecrows, leaves, apples, etc. There is no Halloween clip art included in this fall packet.

Let's talk about easy fall centers for Kindergarten {plus some fall freebies}!
But first let me say Happy Fall!!! It's finally here! Hooray!
You're going to love these easy fall centers for Kindergarten students and homeschool families! Your students will practice both literacy and math skills to make this fall season the most fun yet! Between the apple and leaf activities included, your students are going to love fall all September, October, and November long! Preschool and first grade students may enjoy these activities as well! Plus, there's a FREE downloaded included! Make sure to check it all out and grab your freebie today!
October is just a few days away and as Anne of Green Gables put it “I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” I think it is the most beautiful month of the year here in Wisconsin. The air is crisp and cool, apple picking and fall festivals are everywhere, the leaves have turned beautiful fall colors, and there's pumpkin everything! It's just heaven!
The weather finally got a little cooler, so went apple picking over the weekend and I wanted to share the cutest idea with you! It's a caramel apple bar. Isn't the set up just adorable?
How awesome is this caramel apple bar! You could do this in your classroom, for the teachers' lounge, or even at your own home! Click through to get toppings ideas and learn how it worked for this educator. Great idea for the fall season - whether that's September, October, or November where you live!

I thought this would be such a fun idea for apple week (or even a fall party for adults). There was an apple slicer to quickly cut the apples, there was warm caramel in the crock pot, and toppings. Lots of topping. I didn't get a picture of all of the toppings, but they had Oreo cookie crumbles, sprinkles, crushed M&M's, mini marshmallows, graham cracker crumbles, and mini chocolate chips. They also had a variety of nut items, but I'd definitely leave those out if you were doing this in the classroom. Let me tell you, caramel apples with some Oreo crumbles sprinkled on top are delicious!!

Since fall is upon us I wanted to share some activities from my 6 Pack Centers: Fall Edition. I also wanted to show you some freebies I made to share!

During this time of year we are working hard on letter recognition and letter sounds for both uppercase and lowercase letters. We also work on grasping a strong foundation of numbers to 10. I found these foam leaf cut outs at the craft store and thought they would make for some fun and festive center activities. Can't find leaf cut outs? No worries! You can use my affiliate link to make your own leaves with this leaf punch from Amazon.

I have found that silver Sharpie markers work great for writing on foam pieces!
If you don't have foam pieces, don't worry! You can also use a leaf shape from a die-cut machine if your school has one.
Just program each leaf with an uppercase letter. Students pick a leaf, find the matching lowercase letter and color the letter to match the left. You could have students trace the letter with a pencil before they color it.
When planning easy fall centers for Kindergarten, I try to create activities that have similar directions. It makes life much easier on the kiddos and their teacher! Teachers are not having to constantly re-explain directions and the students feel more confident because they know what to do.
So here's a similar activity for math. The prep is super easy, just draw dots on the leaves for numbers 1-10. The students select a leaf and count the dots. They find the matching number on their paper and color the leaf on the paper to match the leaf with the dots.

With this easy fall centers for Kindergarten activity students are comparing two sets of apples. I have students use a clothespin to “clip” the number that shows more. You could also have students “mark” the set with a snap cube. I find that marking the side that shows more helps students remember their answer as they transfer it to their recording sheet.

Monster Themed Read-Alouds

As Kindergarten teachers, we know that read alouds are such an important part of our classroom schedules. I especially love read alouds at the beginning of the year. It's a {mostly} calm time, where kids can just sit, relax, and listen.
Asking questions about the read aloud is a great way to assess student knowledge and have conversations that help build student relationships.
Below are some ideas for your monster theme read alouds.

Monster Themed Centers

The next idea for your monster theme are literacy and math centers. Each packet in the 6 Pack series includes 6 centers {3 literacy and 3 math} and 6 follow up no-prep practice pages.

The activities included are completely different than the ones in my larger monthly centers packets. I had lots of requests to make more centers, so that's where the 6 Pack idea came about!

The practice pages are to help reinforce the skills students work on during the center activity, so they are great for morning work, small group work, sub tubs, homework, or even remediation.

And just like the monthly centers, these also come with recording sheets and corresponding answer keys, teacher friendly directions, and “I Can” visual direction pages to keep kiddos on task.

These visual direction pages are especially helpful at the beginning of the year. Plus I love that when admin walks through, they can look at these “I Can” pages and know exactly what the kids are supposed to be working on!

Here's a sneak peek at what's included in the 6 Pack Centers: Back to School Monsters Edition!

Back to School Monster Freebie

Here's a few pictures to show you a sneak peek of some of the activities included. This freebie is in my TpT shop so you can click on any of the pictures to take you there or click on the big picture at the end.
First up is Monster Supplies. This makes for a fun class discussion during the first week of school and a great introduction to sorting. We talk about what students need for school and color those objects. This leads into a discussion on the importance of talking care of our class supplies.

Another name practice page {because in Kindergarten you can NEVER have enough}! Students write their name, color the letters in their name, and then count the letters in their name.

Click through to learn more and see how much your Kinders will enjoy their monster fun! {Also great in the preschool or 1st grade classroom!}
This next page helps us practice using just a small dot of glue. We use glue sticks a lot, but I do like to introduce my students to glue bottles. Using the bottles helps strengthen hand muscles and they use them in art class so I like for them to have some practice.
These Back to School monsters are sure to be a hit in your Kindergarten classroom this fall! Students will work on name recognition, writing, math, and more through this fun resource! Here's a fun little activity that is super easy to put together. Just print the page and slide it in a page protector. Student will need a dot cube for this activity.
To play, they roll the dot cube and count the number of dots and place that many snap cubes on the board. They roll again, count, and add more dot cubes to the board. They continue rolling, counting, and adding dot cubes until the board is full.
A few helpful tips…I have my students switch colors each time so they can keep track of their rolls. On the last roll they have to roll the exact number they need. So if they have four empty spaces, they have to roll a four to complete the activity!

Another title for this next activity could be “My First Write the Room” because it's basically the same idea. It's perfect for getting the kiddos up and moving and exploring their new “home away from home”.
First go over the names of each picture with the students before having them complete this activity independently or with a partner. The little explorers walk around the classroom on a hunt for each location listed. Once they find it, they color it on the paper.
This would also be a great activity to do Meet the Teacher night!

Click through to learn more and see how much your Kinders will enjoy their monster fun! {Also great in the preschool or 1st grade classroom!}
Here's an uppercase and lowercase matching activity. Little learners roll the dot cube, count the dots and color {or dab} a lowercase letter based on the letter code in the square. You could also slide this page in to a page protector and have your learners use snap cubes to cover the letters.
